IT Security Threats: Hacking

In February 2010, Shanghai Jiaotong University students won an international computer programming competition again defeating elite U.S. institutions. Jiaotong is home to the School of Information Security Engineering, which specializes in internet security. Recently, Jiaotong University found itself back in the headlines and at the center of  a global hacking investigation. The National Security Agency alleges that, based on evidence, Jiaotong and Lanxiang Vocational School in China’s Shandong Province were involved with Operation Aurora, which targeted large companies such as Google, Adobe and Yahoo! Both schools denied the allegations strongly. However, an anonymous professor from Jiaotong’s School of Information Security Engineering was not surprised because Chinese students hacking into foreign Web sites is quite normal. Beijing has not announced an investigation, but web security experts emphasize that the Chinese government would need to be involved if the ultimate perpetrators are to be found.
